Lymphoedema in the leg
★★★★★
“Ik heb al 5 jaar last van lymfoedeem nadat ik geopereerd ben en er lymfeklieren zijn verwijderd. … Na enkele behandelingen begon ik het grote verschil al te merken. Mijn been krijgt weer haar vorm terug en voelt niet meer zo zwaar. Ik kan weer meer kilometers lopen en krijg mijn motorlaarzen weer aan!”

Your lymphatic system
Lymphatic drainage with the LymphoMed
Your lymphatic system clears waste products from your body. Everything you take in through food, medication and the air you breathe contains substances your body does not need, and your lymphatic system carries them away.
Unlike your blood, lymph fluid has no heart to pump it around. It moves because your muscles contract. If you move little, or if there is a blockage somewhere, the flow slows down. Waste products then stay in your body for longer, fluid can build up, and complaints such as heavy or painful legs can persist.
The LymphoMed was developed in Germany in cooperation with doctors and is used there in clinics and spas. At Body Unlimited in Zaandam we have been working with it since September 2011.

How the LymphoMed works
Measure first, then drain
The LymphoMed does two things: it measures and it drains. The measurement shows how your lymphatic system is doing, how large the blockages are and whether treatment makes sense for you.
During the drainage, pads on your body give a pulsating, massaging sensation that sets your entire lymphatic system in motion. We always treat your whole lower body, because that is by far the largest part of your body. If your upper body needs treatment too, we include it, but that is not often necessary.
We measure during the introduction and after every fifth treatment. The sessions in between are drainage only. That way you can see in numbers what has changed, rather than having to guess.

Compared with manual drainage
Not the same as manual lymphatic drainage
In the Netherlands, manual lymphatic drainage is usually done by a physiotherapist or oedema therapist, who works with their hands. It is a well-established method. The difference with the LymphoMed lies mainly in the measuring and in the area covered: the pads treat your whole lower body in one session, and the measurements let us follow your progress.
| Manual lymphatic drainage | LymphoMed at Body Unlimited | |
|---|---|---|
| Method | By hand | Pads with a pulsating, massaging sensation |
| Measurement | Not possible | At the start and after every fifth treatment |
| Area per session | Depends on the therapist | Your whole lower body |
| Referral | Depends on your insurer | Not needed |
| Reimbursement | Depends on your policy | Not reimbursed |

Complaints
Complaints we treat
Do you live in or around Haarlem and recognise one or more of the complaints below? They do not always have a single cause, but in many people a sluggish lymphatic system plays a part. The measurement shows whether that is the case for you.
- Heavy, tired legs, especially towards the evening
- Painful legs, including legs that hurt when pressed
- Swollen ankles, feet or fingers
- Fluid retention
- Restless legs
- Early varicose veins
- Lipoedema
- Lymphoedema
- Slow recovery after surgery or liposuction
- Persistent tiredness
- Difficulty losing weight

Lipoedema
Lipoedema: working on the complaints
With lipoedema, pain is often the hardest part: legs that hurt as soon as something or someone presses against them. Add to that legs that feel heavy and tired, restlessness, and a loss of strength in your thighs or upper arms.
Lymphatic drainage does not remove lipoedema fat, and we will not promise you otherwise. What we do see in most of our clients is that the pain, heaviness and restlessness decrease. In our experience the treatment also often slows down how quickly the complaints get worse.

Lymphoedema
Lymphoedema: more than keeping it under control
Compression stockings and oedema therapy help to keep lymphoedema under control. With the LymphoMed we aim for more than that: getting the flow going again across your whole lower body. In our experience the results are clearly better, and many clients stop their oedema therapy once they notice the difference.
You decide for yourself whether you want to keep wearing your compression stockings. Many of our clients find they need them much less often, mainly when flying, in hot weather or after sitting still for a long time. This does not apply to compression garments after liposuction: keep wearing those until the clinic that treated you says you can stop.
Good to know
- No referral needed
- You decide about your stockings
- Measured progress every five treatments
After surgery
After an operation or liposuction
After an operation or liposuction your body has extra fluid and waste products to process. You can start lymphatic drainage as soon as your wounds have closed. You do not need permission from your doctor; in fact, many doctors recommend lymphatic drainage after surgery.
The same applies after an illness, a period of extra medication or a stressful time: a course of lymphatic drainage can support your body in clearing what has built up.

Step by step
How a course of treatment works
- You book your introduction online. With the confirmation you receive a health questionnaire, which we ask you to fill in as soon as possible. We read it before your visit.
- The introduction takes about an hour and a half. We go through your questionnaire together, explain how the LymphoMed works, measure your lymphatic system and discuss what we see. You then have half a treatment, so you know how it feels.
- If you continue, you come twice a week for a treatment of 45 minutes.
- After every fifth treatment we measure again. That shows how your body is responding and whether it makes sense to continue or to start tapering off.
- How many treatments you need cannot be said in advance. In practice almost everyone needs at least ten and most need around fifteen. A few people are done after five; very occasionally someone needs twenty.
- In the first weeks your complaints may briefly get worse. That is a good sign that things are moving, although it is not pleasant.
- Once you have reached the result you want, we taper off together.
After a treatment
- You will need to pass urine more often: that is how waste leaves your body
- Drink around two litres of water a day
- Some people feel a little tired after the first sessions; this usually passes within a day
Safety first
When we do not treat
We always go through this list with you beforehand. We do not treat in the case of:
- An active infection or fever
- Cancer, while you are still being treated or are not yet cancer-free
- Thrombosis
- Severe heart failure or kidney failure
- Pregnancy
- A pacemaker or other electrical implant
Because we read your questionnaire before your first visit, you will not make the trip from Haarlem for nothing. If it shows that treatment is not advisable, we let you know in good time and refund your payment.

Prices
What it costs
We are open about our prices, so you know where you stand. The introduction costs €52 and includes the intake, the measurement and half a treatment. After that you pay per series of five treatments, at €322 per series.
You pay for the introduction online when you book. We do this deliberately: it prevents appointments where nobody turns up, and that keeps our costs and our prices low.
If you would first like to talk without a measurement or treatment, you can book a separate intake conversation for €12.
The treatments are not reimbursed by Dutch health insurance, because we are a treatment studio and not a healthcare provider. You do not need a referral.
| Treatment | Price |
|---|---|
| Introduction treatment | € 52,- |
| Single treatment | € 78,- |
| 5 treatments | € 322,- |
| Maintenance | By arrangement |

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Is there a studio in Haarlem?
No. We have one studio, at Paltrokstraat 16 in Zaandam. From Haarlem it is around 25 to 30 minutes by car, and you can park at the door. By train you change at Amsterdam Sloterdijk and get off at Zaandam Kogerveld, a two-minute walk from the studio.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No. You can book directly, without a referral or a letter from your doctor.
Is the treatment covered by Dutch health insurance?
No. Body Unlimited is a treatment studio, not a healthcare provider, so the treatments are not reimbursed by your health insurance.
Is this the same as manual lymphatic drainage?
No. With manual lymphatic drainage a therapist works with their hands. The LymphoMed works with pads and treats your whole lower body in every session. We also measure your lymphatic system at the start and after every fifth treatment, so you can see what has changed.
Does the treatment hurt?
No. The pads give a pulsating, massaging feeling that most people describe as a firm massage. It is not painful.
How many treatments will I need?
That cannot be said in advance. The first measurement shows how your lymphatic system is doing; the follow-up measurements show how your body responds. In practice almost everyone needs at least ten treatments and most need around fifteen. A few people are done after five, and very occasionally someone needs twenty.
Do you measure at every appointment?
No. We measure during the introduction and then after every fifth treatment. The appointments in between are drainage only.
Which part of my body do you treat?
Always your whole lower body, not only the spot where you feel your complaints. If your upper body needs treatment as well, we include it, but in practice that is not often necessary.
Can I come after liposuction or another operation?
Yes. As soon as your wounds have closed, you can start. You do not need permission from your doctor; in fact, many doctors recommend lymphatic drainage after surgery.
Can the LymphoMed help with lipoedema?
Lymphatic drainage does not remove lipoedema fat. What it can do is reduce the complaints around it: pain when your legs are pressed, heavy and tired legs, restlessness and loss of strength. In our experience it also often slows down how quickly the complaints get worse.
I wear compression stockings for lymphoedema. Can I still come?
Yes. You can decide for yourself whether you want to keep wearing your stockings. Many of our clients find they need them much less often, mainly when flying, in hot weather or when sitting still for a long time. This does not apply to compression garments after liposuction: keep wearing those until the clinic that treated you says you can stop.
Can my complaints get worse at first?
Yes, that can happen in the first weeks. It is a good sign that things are moving, although it is not pleasant.
Can I have the treatment in English?
Yes. We speak English during your appointments, with the occasional Dutch word when something is easier to explain that way.
Is the booking page in English?
No, our online booking page is in Dutch. Choose “Lymfedrainage” and then “Introductiebehandeling”. If you would like help, call or WhatsApp us on 06-15086764.
When should I not have the treatment?
We do not treat if you have an active infection or fever, thrombosis or severe heart or kidney failure, if you are still being treated for cancer or are not yet cancer-free, if you are pregnant, or if you have a pacemaker or other electrical implant. We check your health questionnaire before your first visit.
