Client experiences
In their own words
Heavy, painful legs
“Al jaren heb/had ik last van zware tot zeer pijnlijke (onder)benen, mede door mijn spataderen. Vooral ’s nachts waren de klachten soms onhoudbaar. … Na zo’n 10 behandelingen ben ik klachtenvrij. Ik sport vrij veel, loop hard en kan dit weer zonder vermoeide zware benen doen … heerlijk!!”
Translated from Dutch“For years I have/had suffered from heavy to very painful (lower) legs, partly because of my varicose veins. Especially at night the complaints were sometimes unbearable. … After about 10 treatments I am free of complaints. I do quite a lot of sport, I run, and I can do that again without tired, heavy legs … wonderful!!”
Lymphoedema
“Ik had verstoppingen in mijn benen, heel pijnlijk. … Ik heb direct een afspraak gemaakt en na 10 behandelingen hou ik geen vocht meer vast. … Ik ben nu aan het afbouwen, maar ik ben heel blij met het resultaat van deze behandeling van lymphoedeem.”
Translated from Dutch“I had blockages in my legs, very painful. … I made an appointment straight away and after 10 treatments I no longer retain fluid. … I am now tapering off, but I am very happy with the result of this lymphoedema treatment.”
How it feels
A lymphatic drainage massage by the LymphoMed
Many people who look for lymphatic drainage in Zaandam are really looking for a lymphatic massage: something that gets the fluid in their legs moving again. With us, that massage is done by a device rather than by hand.
You lie down comfortably and we place pads on your body. The LymphoMed sends pulses through them that you feel as a rhythmic, firm massage. It is not painful. Because the pads cover your whole lower body at once, the entire area is treated in every 45-minute session.
Your lymphatic system relies on your muscles to keep fluid moving, as it has no pump of its own. Long days at a desk, little exercise or a blockage slow it down. The LymphoMed helps to get that flow going again. The device was developed in Germany together with doctors, and we have been working with it in Zaandam since 2011.

Measure first, then drain
Why we measure before we drain
Before the first drainage session, the LymphoMed measures your lymphatic system. That tells us how high the blockages are and whether a course of treatment makes sense for you. With lymphoedema and lipoedema the answer is always yes.
We do not measure at every visit. The next measurements follow after every fifth treatment. Placed side by side, they show how your body is responding, and that is what our advice to continue or to taper off is based on.
The measurement shows:
- How your lymphatic system is doing now
- Whether treatment is worthwhile
- How your body responds over time
By hand or by device
How this differs from manual lymph drainage
Manual lymph drainage is given by a physiotherapist or oedema therapist using their hands, which is an established method. What we add is the measuring, so progress is visible in figures, and a treatment area that always covers your entire lower body.
| Manual lymph drainage | LymphoMed in Zaandam | |
|---|---|---|
| How | Hands of a therapist | Pads with pulsating pressure |
| Measuring | Not possible | Start and every fifth session |
| Area per session | Varies per therapist | The entire lower body |
| GP referral | May be asked by your insurer | No |
| Insurance | Varies by policy | No |

Complaints
When people come to us
Clients from Zaandam and the rest of the Zaan region usually recognise at least one item on this list. These complaints can have different causes, but a slow lymphatic system often plays a part, and the measurement shows whether that applies to you.
- Legs that feel heavy or tired by the end of the day
- Legs that hurt, also when someone presses on them
- Puffy ankles, feet or fingers
- Holding on to fluid
- Restlessness in your legs, especially in bed
- The first signs of varicose veins
- Lipoedema
- Lymphoedema
- Recovery after an operation or liposuction
- Tiredness that does not go away
- Weight that is hard to shift

Lipoedema
Legs that hurt when pressed
For many women with lipoedema, pain is the worst of it. A bag against your thigh or a child climbing onto your lap can hurt. Often there is heaviness, restlessness and loss of strength as well.
Drainage does not make lipoedema fat disappear, and we will not suggest it does. What it can change is how your legs feel. Most clients notice less pain, less heaviness and calmer legs, and we often see the complaints progress more slowly than before.

Lymphoedema
Lymphoedema: getting the flow going again
Stockings and oedema therapy are mainly there to keep lymphoedema stable. With the LymphoMed we go a step further and work on the flow through your entire lower body. In our experience that gives clearly better results, which is why many clients stop their oedema therapy after a while.
Whether you keep wearing your compression stockings is up to you. Many of our clients end up needing them only now and then: on a flight, on hot days, or after a long time sitting still. This does not apply to compression garments after liposuction: keep wearing those until the clinic that treated you says you can stop.
For lymphoedema:
- Always worth treating
- No referral required
- Progress measured every five sessions
After surgery
Recovering from an operation
An operation or liposuction leaves your body with more to clear than usual. Once the wounds are closed you are welcome to begin, without needing your doctor’s permission. Often it is the doctor who suggests it.
This also applies after surgery to your face, such as a facelift, eyelid correction or jaw operation. Even then, we start with your lower body, the largest part of your body, as with every treatment.

Step by step
Your first appointment and what follows
- You book the introduction online and receive a health questionnaire with your confirmation. Please fill it in soon; we read it before you arrive.
- Reserve around ninety minutes for the introduction. We discuss your questionnaire, explain how the LymphoMed works, measure your lymphatic system and go through the results with you. Then you have half a treatment.
- If you decide to go ahead, you come twice a week for 45 minutes.
- Every fifth treatment includes a new measurement, which shows how your body is responding.
- How many sessions you need becomes clear along the way. Almost everyone needs at least ten and most around fifteen.
- Your complaints may get worse for a short while at first. That means things are moving, even if it is not pleasant.
- When you have reached the result you were after, we taper off together.
After each session:
- You will pass urine more often as waste leaves your body
- Drink about two litres of water a day
- You may feel tired after the first sessions; it usually passes within a day
Before you start
When treatment is not possible
We check your questionnaire before your first visit and go through this list with you. We do not treat in case of:
- An active infection or fever
- Cancer, while you are still being treated or are not yet cancer-free
- Thrombosis
- Serious heart or kidney failure
- Pregnancy
- A pacemaker or other electrical implant
Blood thinners are not a problem, and metal plates usually are not either. With a prosthesis it depends on where it sits, because the pads need to be placed. If treatment turns out not to be advisable, we tell you in time and refund what you paid.

Prices
Costs and booking
Your first visit, the introduction, is €52: intake, measurement and half a treatment in one appointment. The course is then paid in blocks of five sessions, €322 per block. Would you rather start with a conversation only, without measuring or treating? A separate intake conversation costs €12.
You pay for the introduction online when you book; it prevents no-shows and keeps our prices down. Our treatments are not reimbursed by health insurance, and you do not need a referral.
The booking page is in Dutch: choose “Lymfedrainage” and then “Introductiebehandeling”. Need a hand? Call or WhatsApp us on 06-15086764.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Is this a lymphatic massage?
In a way, yes, but not by hand. The LymphoMed does the work: pads on your body give a pulsating, massaging sensation that gets your lymphatic system moving. Most people experience it as a firm massage.
Where exactly is the studio?
At Paltrokstraat 16 in Zaandam. You can park at the door, and Zaandam Kogerveld station is a two-minute walk away.
Can I come after work?
Yes. We are open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 21:00, so evening appointments are possible.
Will the treatment be in English?
Yes. We speak English with you during every appointment, now and then with a Dutch word when that is simply easier.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly; no letter from your GP or specialist is needed.
Does my health insurance pay for it?
No. We are a treatment studio, not a healthcare provider, so Dutch health insurers do not reimburse our treatments.
What happens during the first visit?
The first visit is the introduction. We go through your health questionnaire, explain the LymphoMed, measure your lymphatic system and give you half a treatment. Plan on about an hour and a half.
Is my lymphatic system measured every time?
No. Measurements take place during the introduction and after every fifth treatment. In between, the sessions are drainage only.
How long is a course?
Nobody can say beforehand. Each new measurement shows what your body is doing with the treatments. Almost everyone needs at least ten treatments and most around fifteen; a few people are done after five and now and then someone needs twenty.
Why do you treat my whole lower body?
The lower body is by far the largest part of your body, so that is where we start, whatever your complaint. If your upper body also needs treatment we include it, but that is rarely necessary.
I had facial surgery. Do you still start with my legs?
Yes. Also after a facelift, eyelid or jaw surgery we begin with the lower body. You can start as soon as your wounds have closed.
I take blood thinners. Is that a problem?
No, blood thinners are not a problem. Thrombosis itself is: with thrombosis we do not treat.
I have a prosthesis or metal plates. Can I still be treated?
Metal plates are usually not a problem. With a prosthesis it depends on where it is, because the pads have to be placed on your body. We look at this together during the intake.
Can I stop wearing my compression stockings?
That is your own decision. Many clients find they need their stockings far less often, for instance only when flying, in hot weather or after a long time sitting still. This does not apply to compression garments after liposuction: keep wearing those until the clinic that treated you says you can stop.
How do I book if the booking page is in Dutch?
Choose “Lymfedrainage” and then “Introductiebehandeling”. If you get stuck, call or WhatsApp 06-15086764 and we will help you.
